A headless man costume is certainly an interesting outfit to wear for occasions like Halloween where you are trying to scare people. This costume certainly succeeds in this respect. It is quite a striking costume because your shoulders (fake shoulders anyhow) are well above most other peoples. In fact you could say you stand head and shoulders above the crowd. This is sure to get you noticed at any crowded party or event.

The headless man has a scary or grisly aspect to it. The neck can have fake blood added to it. Many costumes have all the gruesome details, like the backbone visible. Yo can even add to the effects by holding a fake knife or axe. This can also have fake blood added to it. In most headless man costumes, the head of the costume is your actual head. You can make your head more gruesome by adding makeup to make it look pale. You can add wounds, blood or you can zombify your head.

Of course, after your initial entrance, when people get used to your costume, it can actually look quite funny to see a headless man dancing around or doing other things at a party. You can change your doleful expression into one that is having a good time – laughing, joking etc. This can look quite comical once other guests are used to the grisly nature of the headless costume.

The headless man costume illustrated here consists of a long black robe. It has an attachable shoulder/neck attachment that fastens to your shoulders. There is a hole on the center of the robe where your head sticks through so that it creates the affect of a headless man.

Where does the headless man costume idea come from ?

I think the inspiration behind the headless man is the Elizabethan ghost reputed to be Sir Walter Raleigh. People even during Sir Walter’s time to present day have claimed to see his ghost walking around with his head under his arm. You might imagine this would be absolutely terrifying but it has even become something of a joke. There are even cartoons of the headless man dressed in the Elizabethan outfit, with the ruff around the neck and the distinctive pantaloons.

Sir Walter Raleigh’s death was seen as politically motivated. King James wanted to curry favor with the King of Spain. Spain had outlawed many English Elizabethan captain’s including Raleigh because they had plundered Spanish galleons and settlements in the new world. He was implicated in a plot to overthrow the king and unjustly condemned to death. He was executed by beheading. His body was buried without his head (It was reunited 29 years after the execution). This inspired the idea that his ghost wandered around holding his head.
