Headless Horseman Costume – Bring The Hessian Mercenary To Life This Halloween

There are quite a few grisly looking headless costumes you can wear but it seems that the most popular one is the headless horseman costume. This is the costume based on the gruesome headless Hessian mercenary that wreaks fear and havoc on the small hamlet of Sleepy Hollow in upstate New York in the 18th century. Of course the story isn’t true, it’s based on the short story by Washington Irving entitled the “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”.

The story was reworked in the Tim Burton film “Sleepy Hollow” most recently. The film changed the story somewhat, giving more credence to the headless horseman being a supernatural being rather than a mischievous inhabitant in disguise. This makes for a far more creepy and horrific tale, especially as the mysterious rider goes around lopping head off. This horror tale is perfect for Halloween as it has all the elements that make Halloween such a popular holiday – witches, pumpkin heads, spooky looking outfits. And speaking of outfits, this costume would look great at a Halloween party or trick or treat night out.

It is actually quite a simple costume. You get a glossy black shirt, a vest, cape and ascot. There is an inflatable shoulder unit that fits to the vest. On top of the shoulders is a realistic looking neck, minus the head. The neck has a bloody, fresh look about it implying that it has recently been decapitated. Charming !

You need to add your own black pants and shoes to give that mysterious look to it. This costume is made for children, event though they probably shouldn’t know anything about the Sleepy Hollow movie as it was not a children’s movie. Unless they have read the original story or had it read to them.

Nevertheless, the idea of a headless horseman riding through the night on a charging black steed is an iconic image that is sure to stay with anyone. Hence the reason it would make an ideal costume for Halloween and get a great reaction at a party. It would be even better as a trick or treat costume as you would have that element of surprise when knocking at a door or walking around at night and scaring passersby.
